Thinking of having a website to support your business? Then read on to find out what you should avoid when building one.
Music playing by default
You never know what your visitors taste in music are. So why risk it by playing a tune that might turn them off? Also you never know if they may be surfing late at night or in the office during the day. Therefore it is advisable if you leave it off by default and give the visitor the option of playing it or not.
Avoid Flash
Having a website built in Flash is cool and interesting but overdoing it can be quite cumbersome to the visitor. Avoid using Flash in instances where the visitor has to sit through the animation before getting to the content (aka the dreaded Flash intro). This is likely to irritate the visitor as it is just considered a waste of time. Try and use Flash as a minimal detail in the background that does not interfere with the text at all. Most web experts will advice against the use of Flash at all.
Not having Flash alternatives
If you’re still thinking of building a Flash website, then make sure non-Flash users will still be able to have access to your website. You would not want to lose a potential customer just because they are not using the same plug-in software as you are.
An overcrowded page
Avoid having so many things placed on your page as the user will probably get exhausted from finding the actual content that he or she was looking for. Keep the page organized by keeping the key content as the main focus of the page.
Avoid the use of industry jargon in your content
Communication is key in reaching out to your consumers. If they aren’t able to understand what you’ve written then your website and your business is in big trouble. Try and use the simplest of terms as possible. Where there are situations where you can’t help using technical jargon, make sure you clearly explain or hyperlink it to another page that does explain what the term means.
Spelling mistakes
Have you been to a website that has spelling mistakes? If you have you probably weren’t very impressed. Remember it is the content on your site that brings the traffic in. Hire a professional copy writer if you feel your literacy level is not up to its best. Make sure you go through your content a couple of times to eliminate all possibilities of a spelling error.
